The bergamot season has started in Italy, running from the first week of November until the end of February/early March. Flowering in the springtime was good, however high temperatures and drought conditions during the summer has caused a reduction in overall crop quantity/yields. Fruit prices are higher in the fresh market than industrial markets, and there is very little carryover from the previous season. Bergamot oil prices are expected to remain stable....

It’s a little early to have a clear forecast on the forthcoming citrus season out of Italy, though the general consensus seems to be that crop volumes will be reduced as compared to last year. This is mainly due to the unfavorable climate conditions that occurred during the early post-flowering stage of bergamot, with temperatures in the region of Syracuse hitting nearly 120 F (48.8 C). These temperatures caused a significant loss of fruit, meaning that the harvest is expected to be delayed by at least 2-3 weeks....
