Berjé Barometer – Indonesian Rainfall
March is a critical time of year for Indonesia, as it is often the height of the rainy season. In normal years, the region experiences an average of 26 days of rain during March, accumulating around 144mm (5.6 inches) of precipitation. The 2022 season appears to reflect this trend, with many territories experiencing above-average rainfall, including Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Java. Some regions have even reported rainfall that exceeds 200% of their yearly average. Despite this recent spike in precipitation, the Indonesia Weather Bureau has predicted that rainfall will stabilize in April, with numbers returning to their normal rate, or even below average, in most places throughout the islands.
Clove is one of Indonesia’s most sensitive products to rainfall, and prices for new material have remained high throughout these unseasonably-wet months. This trend is expected to continue until April, with clove bud, clove leaf, and other clove derivatives remaining in short supply until the weather has stabilized. Nutmeg is also expected to remain in low supply until April, as the harvest process is made much more difficult by intense rains. Patchouli, on the other hand, has remained quite stable amid this unseasonal weather. Prices for Patchouli are also stable.
