Global Citrus Forecast for 2022
The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its final citrus forecast of the 2021/2022 growing season on Tuesday, July 12th.
In Florida, orange production and grapefruit production are both expected to rise by 1% when compared to previous estimations. This places orange production at 40.95 million boxes and grapefruit at 3.3 million boxes. Other citrus forecasts, such as tangerines, remain unchanged.
In California, total orange production estimates fell by 2.3 million boxes, with the new forecast sitting at 49 million boxes. However, the state’s Valencia production actually grew by 700,000 boxes since the previous forecast. This growth was offset by non-Valencia production falling by around 3 million boxes.
Outside of the United States, Argentinian orange production remains steady, with no major expansions in terms of land acquisition or planting area. For the 2021/2022 season, total orange production is expected to increase from 200,000 MT to 205,000 MT. However, consumption of fresh citrus in Argentina is expected to rise to 628,000 MT, which is 21% higher than earlier estimations.
This increased consumption is commonly attributed to the demand for Vitamin C amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite heightened demand, orange exports out of Argentina are expected to increase, resulting in 88,000 MT of new material entering the international citrus market for the 2022 season.
