Description of Buchu Leaf Oil
Buchu oil is produced by steam distillation of the dried leaves of Agathosma betulina and Agathosma crenulata, both native to South Africa’s Western Cape. The oil ranges from yellow to brownish-yellow and has a distinctly strong, peppery-minty aroma with herbal, camphoraceous, and slightly sweet undertones. Its composition includes diosphenol, a terpenoid phenol responsible for the oil’s characteristic intensity, and menthone, which contributes to its cool, mint-like note.
Buchu continues to hold niche but consistent appeal within fine fragrance, flavor, and personal-care sectors, where small additions impart freshness and lift to citrus, aromatic, and green compositions. Yields and oil quality are closely linked to drying and distillation methods, both of which are handled with precision by experienced producers. Sustainability efforts at origin, including regenerative farming and energy-efficient distillation, continue to support long-term reliability in quality and availability. Buchu remains a distinctive and enduring natural ingredient valued for its brightness and depth.
